When it comes to tackling the toughest industrial challenges, traditional pumps face difficulty handling extremely heavy sludge like industrial oil-based sludge, leading to clogs, reduced efficiency and frequent breakdowns. These problems can result in expensive downtimes and maintenance concerns which can lower overall productivity.

Sludge Pumps answers the challenge with its hydraulic-driven mechanisms that exemplify reliability and resilience in safeguarding the environment from potential failure. The company designs and manufactures high-quality American-made vertical piston pumps used in hazardous waste facilities for tank cleaning, oil spills, API separators, drum sucking and unloading 1,000,000+ centipoise sludge.

“Our pumps are engineered to outperform competitors when it comes to pumping extremely heavy sludge, including industrial oil-based sludge. We are the top choice in the market and focus on providing the best solution for our customers,” says Lloyd Gilliam, owner of Sludge Pumps.

The company’s vertical pumps have decreased the number of repairs by 70 to 75 percent compared to the previous labor-intensive pump. These pumps are dependable and provide excellent service.

Sludge Pumps’ ‘Bolsena Vertical Sludge Pump,’ dubbed ‘the beast,’ has low maintenance and high mobility. The pump benefits from the force of gravity and easily separates heavy materials like rocks, bolts and nuts that may be pulled into it without affecting its internal components. The pump also features a pot at the bottom of the cylinders for collecting heavy debris and a large clean-out valve for easy maintenance between projects or during work. Given that the pump is positioned vertically, oil is applied to the back of the pistons. This allows for a liquid seal to form between the product and the pump when a vacuum is created, resulting in a high vacuum level being achieved without any leakage from the pistons.

Sludge Pumps offers complete pump packages including diesel or electric hydraulic power units and trailers. It provides repair services and has a full line of inventory to restore the pumps to their pristine state to keep clients’ business running smoothly. Parts can be ordered for onsite repairs or pumps can be repaired at the Sludge Pumps facility.

The company offers industry- and application-specific inputs that lead to customers’ success, which is substantiated in the following case study. A client in East Chicago receives 55-gallon drums full of hazardous waste from various customers across the nation. They previously used a vacuum tank with an air pump to extract the contents of the drums and had carbon filters to eliminate volatile substances from the air. The process used to take three minutes to empty one drum. After installing Sludge Pump’s vertical pump, the time drastically decreased to 30 to 40 seconds for cleaning one drum. This saved the client a significant amount of time and allowed them to catch up on barrels that had been left stagnant. The pumps also reduced their carbon expenses by 90 percent. This achievement prompted the client to install four additional pumps at their initial site and three at a different location. They are currently contemplating adding more pumps in the near future.

Sludge Pump is also constructing pumps and power units for another hazard-displaced facility, which are expected to be operational within the next three to four months. This facility is transitioning from an old process to a new one with the help of its equipment that successfully manages hazardous waste.

The company stands as a testament to human ingenuity’s ability to protect and preserve nature for future generations by refining its technology every day. Sludge Pumps inspires confidence in its ability to overcome environmental challenges and win the battle for sustainability and cleanliness, paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future for all.
